This position available for adults and teens age 16 and older.

As a Nature Guide volunteer, you will enhance our visitors' experience through natural history interpretation. With over 50,000 people visiting Drumlin Farm each year, Nature Guides play a key role in welcoming visitors and sharing information on a variety of nature-based topics about birds, animals, plants, the changing seasons... Specially prepared kits will help you engage with both adults and younger visitors. Our Field Teachers provide the training that will prepare you for this position.

This volunteer opportunity is a perfect for those excited by and committed to learn more about nature and share their knowledge with the children, adults, and families who visit our sanctuary. A background in education is a plus, while enjoyment from interacting with the public, a love of nature, and enthusiasm are required!

Responsibilities:

  • Setting up a station with a table, chair, and your kit for that session.
  • Speaking to public about your chosen topic. Interacting enthusiastically with a diverse range of visitors who have various levels of knowledge about the natural world; judging the amount of information and delivery based on visitor interest.
  • Assisting visitors by providing information to general site-based questions, and communicating with staff when additional support is needed.
  • Putting away your station at the end of your session.
  • Recording your volunteer hours. 

Requirements:

  • Be age 16 or older.
  • Submit and successfully clear a CORI/SORI background check.
  • Attend an in-person Nature Guide training session.
  • Come dressed to volunteer outdoors. 
  • Communicate in person and via email with staff.
  • Interact with visitors of all ages and abilities. 
  • Commit to a minimum of one 3-hour shift per month. Mornings from 10am to 1pm. Afternoons from 1:00 to 4:00.
  • Volunteer for a minimum of six months.
