Maple Sugar Shack Crew Members play a key role in producing up to 100 gallons of Moose Hill Wildlife Sanctuary’s very own maple syrup and educating visitors on the tradition of maple sugaring. As a volunteer member of our Maple Sugar Shack Crew, you'll learn about and experience the history of maple sugaring in New England, ultimately operating our evaporator as we make maple syrup and demonstrate the process to the public. In this role, you’ll help connect people with the sight, smell, and sweet taste of nature.
Important Note: Maple sugaring is highly seasonal and entirely dependent on weather. As we cannot predict exactly when the season will start nor how long it will run, the right volunteer for this role will have availability and flexibility during the general timeframe of the season.
Responsibilities
- Work in the Sugar Shack and run the evaporator in pairs (regularly load wood, tend to the fire, monitor sap levels in the evaporator, draw syrup out).
- Explain and demonstrate the maple sugaring process “from sap to syrup” to visitors, including school groups.
- Be prepared to work in cold/inclement weather.
Full training provided. Plenty of syrup samples available!
