Drumlin Farm is home to a variety of injured, non-releasable animals that act as "Animal Ambassadors" as part of our educational programs; for example, a screech-owl visiting a fifth-grade classroom in Lowell can pique curiosity and ignite an interest in the natural world.
Volunteers support our staff with the care of hawks, owls, vultures, ducks, songbirds, fox, opossum, skunk, groundhogs, rabbits, reptiles, and amphibians in two ways. Regular volunteers join us one morning per week for a minimum of six months. Their tasks include cleaning enclosures, supplying fresh food and water, light housekeeping, and some animal enrichment. Diet prep volunteers follow a "menu" and weigh & chop veggies, fruit, and protein for each animal. This is an afternoon position with more flexible scheduling.
Regular volunteer tasks include working near the ground & floor, walking to & working inside the large bird enclosures on uneven trails / surfaces. Light lifting is required. The sessions occur sun, rain, or snow.
Diet preparation is indoors and requires attention to detail and standing while working.
Note: these are hands-off opportunities without contact with the animals. That said, how cool to learn about and be close to the wildlife.
