Early Birders Walk Volunteer

Description

Bird Walk Volunteers support visitors to find and identify local birds on a Mass Audubon-led birding programs at Felix Neck. Volunteers may also assist the program leader with greeting visitors, teaching first-timers how to use binoculars, and sharing information about birds. This role is best suited for those who want to share their love of birds with others, with the goal of supporting individuals to connect with, learn about, and protect the natural world.

Responsibilities

  • Attend the full 2-hour birding program regularly, held every Thursday from 8:00–10:00 am, running June 18 through September 17.
  • Support Mass Audubon staff with setup, distribution, and collection of loaner binoculars
  • Support participants to use binoculars and spot and identify birds
  • Act as a “sweep” during the walk to make sure everyone stays with the group

Qualifications

  • Experienced birder with ability to identify common species
  • Enjoys spending time interacting with and educating others, who have various levels of background knowledge on birds and nature
  • Adult aged 18 or older
  • Successful completion of a CORI/SORI background check

Schedule/Shift Information

  • Volunteers are asked to sign up for at least two programs.
  • Volunteers are responsible for signing up for their shifts and logging their own hours after each volunteer shift in the online Volunteer Portal.
