Opportunities From: Mass Audubon

Volunteer Gardeners help maintain the gardens at Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. This means weeding, planting/transplanting, and cleaning up last year’s seed heads. Shifts involve working outside, standing, sitting, and kneeling. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet people and share interests in nature. This position is from May through October. Volunteers can set their own schedule once trained.

Responsibilities:

Learning the plants in Wellfleet Bay’s pollinator/wildlife gardens.Weeding, pruning, and giving a “Chelsea Chop” to certain leggy plants along garden trails.Occasional watering of areas where irrigation doesn’t reach.Helping with occasional planting days.  

Qualifications:

Familiarity with garden plants, especially native ones, is preferred.Able to bend, kneel, and dig.    

Requirements:

Must be 18+.Ability to pass CORI/SORI background check.Reliably respond to email communications with staff.Must adhere to all policies in the Mass Audubon Volunteer Safety Handbook.

Ecological Management Volunteers play a key role in the enjoyment and safety of all visitors to Wellfleet Bay. They work with our Property Manager on ecological management projects including landscaping, trail maintenance, events setup, and small carpentry projects. This volunteer opportunity is scheduled on Friday mornings from 9am to 12pm, October through June.   

Qualifications: 

Ability to work outside moving from location to location throughout the sanctuary and nature center.  Ability to use landscaping and hand tools, training is provided.

Ability to work cooperatively and independently as part of our Property Management Team. Must be 18+.Reliably respond to email communications with staff.  Must adhere to all policies in the Mass Audubon Volunteer Handbook.  Ability to pass CORI/SORI background check.

Support our local Adopt-A-Highway program by picking up trash and litter along Route 6 and West Road, Van Rensselaer’s to Maurice’s Market. Work with our Property Management Team to protect the nature of beautiful Wellfleet for people and wildlife. This opportunity is on the 2nd Tuesday every month, April through October.  

Qualifications:

Ability to work outside. Excellent spatial awareness and mental alertness. Good physical condition, including sight and hearing.  

Requirements:

Attend a safety training session and view a safety video prior to participation. Ability to work cooperatively and independently as part of our Property Management Team.Must be 18+.Reliably read and respond to email communications with staff. Must adhere to all policies in the Mass Audubon Volunteer Handbook.Ability to pass CORI/SORI background check.
