Volunteer: Fall Salt Marsh Clean-UpSpend your afternoon helping with Joppa Flats' bi-annual Salt Marsh Cleanup on Saturday, September 19th! We will be tidying the salt marsh behind the Joppa Flats Education Center, and participants assist with the sorting of collected materials and will write their totals on data sheets provided. Participants can enjoy meeting the live inhabitants from the salt marsh including mummichogs, mud crabs and our horseshoe crab hatchlings. All participants should dress for the weather, wear waterproof footwear and bring a rake and work/garden gloves and trash grabbing tongs if you have them. Bring your own water bottle to stay hydrated; we’ll have light snacks ready to keep you energized. This project is family-friendly – we'll have options for volunteers of all ages. Anyone younger than 18 will need to volunteer alongside a parent/guardian. Participants are welcome to sign up for one or both of the available shifts! This volunteer opportunity will include one or more projects that are accessible and inclusive to volunteers with a broad range of abilities. Through our Adopt-a-Site program, you will be assigned an area that will be your exclusive responsibility to treat on your own schedule throughout the pulling season. This area can be as big or as small as you decide that you can handle. For some of you, this might be your very own backyard. Rather than having to schedule a specific time to volunteer, you can visit and pull your "adopted" site whenever is most convenient for you. We will provide you with a detailed map of all documented pepperweed stands at the site, straightforward guides on pepperweed identification/treatment, and necessary field supplies (e.g., heavy duty contractor bags). The training date is June 6th, 2026 from 10am-12pm at Joppa Flats. In order to sign up as a volunteer, you must be available on this date.
